I've always felt sort of disorganized since the topics covered in this blog range from whimsical imaginative creatures to more traditional studies like these I'm posting now. I've decided to make a place for these things over at SideviewPF so if you like the work here so far, be sure to go over there and see how that side develops too. Why sideview? I'll save that story for another post.

I will continue to update Doodles and Chimps with more imaginative stuff in the future so keep an eye here too.

Studio Visits and Digital Doodles

The only thing I miss about my Midwood apartment is the bedroom converted into a studio. That in mind, I was happy to visit the spacious studios of artist friends lately and I wanted to share some images and links.

This was not a planned post so I didn't take many pictures, but follow the links to get to know these artists more. Those who follow me on twitter have seen these photos already, but here it is again for those that don't.

First up is a shot of egg tempera supplies in the studio of Kam Mak. I learned a lot about oil paint from Kam while in college, but now he has shifted his interests to egg tempera for his personal work. He is known for his children's books and more recently, the Lunar New Year stamps.

Next is Dahlia Broul who also works with children's books. Her work is fun, detailed and includes great character expressions. She kindly shared some perspective tips as she worked on the bridge. Go check out her work.

In the foreground of that photo, you can see I was doodling on Photoshop. It started out as a gesture on my phone using the Sketcher app from Wargoth. After some work with a tablet and PS, the result is below.

I know, I know - sickeningly cute, clean lines... I have no idea what got into me. I'll be sure to muck it up when I paint it. The 'No Pain' shirt will make sense when the final is paired with its collaborative companion by AXH. Below is a less friendly sketch, also done on Sketcher. The brushes on that app are fantastic.

Some cool recent mentions of my work came from two unexpected non-art related places.

The first is from Cagepotato, a site I regularly follow for their MMA news and fightpicker game. After seeing some MMA related art covered on their site, I decided to send in my Chuck Liddell and Rear Naked Choke painting. They posted the work in a "comments" feature and also sent me a T-shirt that I'd like to consider my keyboard warrior black belt. Yes!

The second site is obsessed with the numbers 222. You know, like Jim Carrey was with the number 23. Funny though, they found the painting on my blog and link back to it but credit the work to Jay222 who I did the painting for. Silly number geeks. No replies when I messaged them to say so. Here it is anyway - 222 Mystery.

As for new stuff, I have some drawings I haven't uploaded yet but I will soon.

CTU Blindbox Released

After months of anticipation and teasers, the Custom Toy Union artist blindbox series is finally available. They were first seen at Dragatomi's booth in the San Diego Comic Con last week and those who weren't able to go can still get box through the CTU store. Each piece is an original custom work and they are limited in numbers so be sure to grab a few while you can.

Leading up to their release, many news sites have covered the series. You can find mine mentioned and revealed at SpankyStokes, ToysRevil, and Kollectible Kulture.

I've been sitting on this playground update for a while but better late than never right? This photo was taken the weekend after we installed our characters. We noticed a group of models posing for a photographer in the space so I snapped a shot too before it became too awkward to shoot. We didn't stick around to see if the characters were incorporated into anything, but it would be purty neat if they were.

About a week later, all the characters were stolen. We somehow thought they would last a little longer than that or at least be sniped one at a time. Here are the initial sketches for my guys. A little different from the final pieces, but in some ways I like the sketches better. The photos are about actual size.

At the Playground Ya Know

The playground close to me is chained up, run down, and an overall sorry sight. There is good reason for this, but friends and I decided to enter the debris danger zone to help make it look slightly less like a prison yard.

We brought with us debris resistant creatures to populate the space. Below, I stand between my two for scale. They look pretty bummed that I'm leaving them in this chain link prison.

The rest of the creatures were done by AXH Animation. An exception is the turtle below which was a collab between AXH and Oi who also shot many of these photos.

Now let's see how long it takes before they escape or are kidnapped.

Custom Toy Union Blind Box Dunny Interview

A while ago, Pranay from Custom Toy Union asked me to be a part of their upcoming blind box series to be released this summer at the San Diego Comic Con. I believe you will be able to get your hands on them at Dragatomi's booth. Below is a mock up of my contribution and I will have four pieces total in the series. We brought Polly home a few weeks ago and her condition is much better. She is now back to walking and just days ago started to use her litter box again. Still blind, but she has already mastered getting off the couch with minimal stumbling. She can't jump to the window and people watch anymore so she sits facing the front door listening to people pass by. She finds me by sniffing out my feet and will nap with her head leaning on a foot. She mostly just sleeps now and is constantly looking for food when awake. Fatty!

Pollycat

Pollycat has been a part of this blog almost as much as my artwork so I thought I would talk about what happened to her. She's not doing very well - she is now blind, deaf, and I question whether she can even feel any sort of touch. She can't walk or stand or even sit up, but that is slowly improving. Just days ago she was running around being the usual great companion she is. So what happened?

Polly is only two years old and was healthy when we brought her to the vet for a grooming and physical this past Monday. She was fine after both and I should have brought her home. Instead, I left her at the vet longer so she can have a dental check-up as well. She wasn't the same afterwards. No explanation can be given why or how this happened but from her symptoms it looks like this healthy two-year-old had a stroke. We are told that she may improve and she is staying at the vet as she slowly recovers. A full recovery is not likely, but only a few days have passed and it is too early to make a decision on her future.

It's strange here at home without her. Hopefully she will be well enough to come back soon.

Then yesterday, my dad's betta fish died. At least the week is almost over.

Sgt. Huntington is my contribution to the Sketchbot show opening tonight at My Plastic Heart. More photos on Flickr. Named after the street the pics were shot on though I did consider using the cross street instead.

The head came from one of these guys I sculpted a few months back. And the original sketchbot figure looks like this. The rest is sculpey and random objects.

Last Wednesday marked the opening of the Buck 50 Brew Art Show at Pie in Union Square. The place was packed, the buck fifty brew flowed and pie was plenty. It was great to see old friends and meet new ones. I vaguely remember bubbles at the end of the night...

November Events

The next few weeks are gonna be hectic for me as I prepare for the following events while moving from my current Midwood apartment to one in Carroll Gardens. Biting more than I can chew as always... here's where you should be if you don't want to be square:

The first is a solo show at Dragatomi in Sacramento on the 14th. I will have some nice surprises for this show and more info will be released in the weeks to come. I'm looking forward to heading over there as I've been itching to temporarily get out of NY for a while now.

I will also be hanging out in the Dragatomi booth during Designer Con (formerly VTN or Vinyl Toy Network) on the 21st.

And on the night of the 21st, starting at 7pm, the Urban Story Tellers show will be opening in Inkies. Thanks to Angelo Sison for a great job in curating this event. I will take pics of my piece before I send it out.

Urban Story Tellers will feature work by : Lil'Japan, Mark Navalero, Joey Boy, Orly Locqulao, Rowel Alfelor, Peap Tarr, Paul Shih, Patrick Francisco, Troy Stith, Anthony Catubig, Pellet, Tony Ancheta, Karl Vittali and Oliver Ocampo.

Looks like the 3D Canvas show was a success over at Terminal22 and they recap the event nicely here. It includes the following video which I share here to save you the trouble of clicking on the various links that clutter my paragraphs.

Over here on the East Coast, the sketch card show/auction included giant painted versions of the cards. Mine was a portrait of Darth Nihilus (below) and I was just told that it sold along with my sketch card of General Grievous. Photos of the show are here.

But thanks to all who poked, messaged, commented, prank called just to make sure. I have, however, been lazy, burnt out, whining, and working (somewhat). For those that wanna know, I will be in the Suckadelic Group Suckoff 2 show early in September. I also just finished a piece for another group show that will be announced in the next few weeks - I can't say more or I will magically be turned into a frog. Then in November, I will have a small solo in Cali that I will talk more about as it gets organized and I create the work. I will be in attendance. See? Not dead... not yet. Gimmie Art - Irondale

I turned out the following painting in about a day as a late addition to the April Fool's Artplay event at Irondale in Brooklyn. The show, sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery, will feature photography by Ricky Powell as well as a variety of performances. Ricky Powell will be on hand at the opening to sign copies of his book.

Here is more info on the event taken from the curator's press release:

"Gimmie Art, a brand new Brooklyn non for profit monthly art and music festival will launch April Fools Day at the historical Irondale Center. The festival is centered on celebrating and preserving original work that explores emerging themes in our society through art, music, film, live performances and new experimental media.

Gimmie Art’s first event, sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery will consist of a book signing and viewing of original photographs by urban rap photographer and public access icon, Ricky Powell (www.rickypowell.com). Francesco Mugnai recently created a list called Inspiration: 50 Fantastic Vinyl Toys. Looking through the list, I was certainly inspired. And towards the bottom, my jaw dropped. The Red Mofo hissed at me and I couldn't figure how he got there. Thanks, Francesco, for the pleasant surprise.

Albino Munny

The munny was inspired by Snowflake the albino gorilla, who I came across when looking for reference pics. Snowflake was a unique and much happier creature - and had more teeth.

Toys R Evil recently wrote about the current Star Wars Galaxy 4 card series by Topps and the various artists involved with the shaped cards. As a follow up to this write up, TRE has done a Q&A session with the artists. My Q&A was posted today and can be seen here.

New Painting and Mega Munny

Finally done and shipping out today. These two works will be exhibited at C. Emerson Fine Arts for the "Under the Influence II" show that runs from March 6th - April 4th. Please contact the gallery if you are interested in these pieces. More photos (and larger too) on my Flickr.

The painting was shot at an angle to minimize glare. All the black in the gorilla is actually not that flat. There are touches of brown in certain areas but that was unfortunately lost in the photo. Thanks, SQ, for posing - I hope you are semi-recognizable in the painting.

I went to the new Jollibee location in Woodside, Queens this weekend and only had to wait two hours to get food. Not bad since I was warned it would be a three hour wait. I HAD TO bring the munny with me...

Last week I donated an old painting of Jim Carrey as Fire Marshall Bill to a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Benefit silent auction. The event was sponsored by P.I.N.K. I am full of idiotic ideas and this has to be my dumbest yet. Inside this little black box is a Dunny I painted and giving away for FREE to the person that finds it - it's not hard, I'll tell you where it is...

On this beam in the Union Square station is a black panel. Behind this panel is the boxed Dunny attached by Velcro. Get it, it's yours. Go take a break from work. Go between classes. Go do something dumb. Get a free dunny!

DIY Decal

I was fortunate enough to be able to give one of these a test run. Lots of glare in the pics and so I will try to shoot better ones when the paint dries. Now where do I stick it? Here is my review:

A DIY decal is an awesome idea and there is no better template than a MadL one. With that said, the decal was easy to work with since it accepts pencil well and easily erases when needed. I ended up spraying my drawing with crystal clear and painted over it with oil. The decal takes paint nicely as well since it didn't wrinkle when exposed to the wet medium. This may also have been due to the crystal clear though. Overall I love the product and will definitely do more when they are available.

ILLAZILLA is a wooden DIY platform designed by TNES who invited me to customize one for a show in March.

I got my ILLAZILLA in the mail and decided to doodle on it. This will NOT be painted and finished since I have a different concept I want to follow. Still, I couldn't help but draw on this when I got it. I will post pics of the painted version as it gets going.

Money is short, and times are hard

So here's your effin' Christmas card!

There was a time when I thought I was gonna paint everything digitally for the rest of my life. But when I found oil paint - it was love at first brush and I never looked back. Until now. I thought it would be fun to break out the old dusty Wacom buried under stacks of paper on my desk and give Corel Painter another go. It's incredible what can be done on this program. It will never take the place of my true love but it's comforting to know I can have a fling with it occasionally - LOL.

Remembering Aviva Stone

Aviva Stone (1948-2007) was a popular figure model in NYC and she is being remembered by Spring Studio with a group exhibition of paintings and drawings of her by the artists she has worked with. My drawing above, done just a few months before her passing, will be included in the show. There will also be a memorial for Aviva on the 28th.

My Little Thursday

I walked into Spring today to find the first little person modeling that I have ever seen. Having my heart set on a female model of different proportions, I walked out, up the stairs, and down the windy block.

Then I thought, "When am I ever gonna have another chance to draw a little person?" Possibly never. I couldn't let it happen. So I doubled back, almost knocking coffee into the face of an innocent passerby unaware of my mission.

I'm glad I did. These are the first drawings I'm not mad at for a while. Look, I almost fit the whole figure on the page in the first one! Change... yes I can.

Sketches for Small Works Show

These drawings were my submission to APW's Small Works, Big Ideas show which opened last Friday. I am starting a series of paintings for two shows this Spring that will be my biggest yet. The works will include large scale canvases and large toys as well. I get more nervous the more I talk about it... lol. Details to come.

I forgot to mention in my previous post that my Iceman MadL was sent over to San Francisco for the Delicious Drips MeMadL Show at D-Structure. Thanks to Lief Storer for organizing the event and to Toycyte for covering it. ToyCyte has a write-up on the event and includes pics of some of the other pieces in the show. Artists are really killing these 10" MadL's!

At this point I think I owe Spanky Stokes (who also has a custom in the show) and Custom Toy Lab my first born. Thanks to Spanky and Raphael for their quick posts of this custom and allowing Chuck to continue his slutty ways.

I know some of you miss my cat. Polly has been good and will not be following Chuck's promiscuity (she was recently fixed). Good girl!

SLB Sketch, CTL, and the Red Mofo

We are sitting for Dolce, the cat that inspired us to get our own Pollock. I thought these two were gonna be best friends, but all they do is stare and hiss. Argh!

The Dunny below was commisioned and after tracking the package, I decided that it is safe to post it now. Was hard to let go of this one since I really liked the results.

Below is a commissioned MadL along with a dunny I am giving away as a bday present. The remaining two will go to a show in September if the sorta experimental thing I'm working on now turns out bad. More info on the show next week.

I took the photo below from the Melbourne Stencil Festival's Flickr page. It was one of very few photos that showed my work. I have no idea who those people are, but I think she likes the camera.
